| The Idea for All Wound Up |
| If you want the shorthand story, you might like to view the video above. The video is courtesy of our friends at Picture Show in Chicago. You can contact them at 847-446-7070. If you prefer the longhand story - here ya go....My wife, Jane, and I decided about 25 years ago when we were first dating that if we ever got the chance to have a store of our own it would be built around wind up toys. Our interest began with a visit to a store in New York City that carried a wide range of plastic windups, antique tin toys and music boxes. At first, we bought their plastic wind ups to amuse our two cats – Sam and Alfie (and us). But it didn’t take long for Jane to start collecting them for her own enjoyment (in fact, she still has most of them). |
| Turning Our Idea Into Reality |
Fast forward to April 2005. Major life changes turned our lives upside down and we decided to give our dream a shot. For the next two months, we created what would become known as All Wound Up. The name for the store was in my head for a long time, but we needed to define the kind of experience the store would provide and the kinds of products we would offer. |
| Creating The Right Atmosphere |
We wanted to create a retail experience that was both fun and “hands-on.” Sampling would play a key role. We figured “if you try it, you’ll like it” – and you might just buy it. A talented designer friend of ours offered to create our store logo. Her work provided us with a bright color scheme that helped us make the store more inviting. |
| “Fun Stuff To Wind Up. Fun Ways to Wind Down.” |
| Early on, we knew that our audience needed to be broader than just kids. We wanted to appeal to big kids like us too. To accomplish this, we decided to broaden our idea beyond just fun wind up toys and music boxes. We decided to create a list of everything we could think of that winds and unwinds. We asked our sales reps to bring us product ideas that fit our concept. This led us to an eclectic mix of products: unique clocks, classic toys, and fun barware. And, for those of us who are “Too Wound Up?”, we added relaxation products. Oh yeah – we also threw in a slew of fun adult novelty items to get people laughing and help them unwind. The products we selected helped us write our tagline: “Fun stuff to wind up. Fun ways to wind down.” It seemed to sum up our objective nicely. |
| (Nearly) Born On The 4th of July |
On July 2, 2005, ‘All Wound Up’ opened in Provincetown, Massachusetts. We knew that the free spirit atmosphere in P-town – as its known by locals and visitors alike - would complement the kind of products we planed to sell. And vacationers, who make up most of P-town’s clientele, would enjoy the fun atmosphere we had in mind. Boy, were we right! I can’t tell you how many compliments we’ve gotten. The most common word people use to describe our store is “fun.” |
| Launching Into Cyberspace |
| Since P-town is primarily a seasonal destination, we knew that having an internet-based store would provide us an opportunity to keep things going year-round. But we wanted all of you to have the same experience our customers get in the retail store – or at least as much as we could provide through a computer monitor. So, through the magic of Flash video technology, we have attempted to let you virtually experience as many of the wind up product offerings from our store as possible. So go ahead, watch the movies and you'll see what we mean! |
| We’ve got a pretty varied selection of wacky stuff to buy, so click a-wound and have some fun! Thanks for stopping by. We hope you’ll come back often. |
